Western Australia

Greg Fawell - Western Australia

Born in Perth Western Australia on the 7th November 1948 and lived in WA since then. A true born and bred West Aussie!!

I was first introduced to Square Dancing in the late 1960’s in a small club in the Methodist Church Hall in Carlisle with Steve Turner as the Caller. My first foray into calling was later that year at a youth camp in Bunbury where I was part of the organizing team for the camp and as part of the evening activities I called a square dance to the song “Red River Valley”. It was a short lived career move which started and ended on the same night until nearly 40 years later.

In 1973, Christine and I married and we soon moved to the country. After a number of years of absence from dancing we started to dance at a club in the southwest of WA, Manjimup, at the Karri On Dancers which was a fun and challenging time for our one set club. We even ventured to hold a Christmas Dance at the Donnelly River Workers Club in Donnelly River Mill Club and managed to lure Steven Turner to be our guest caller for the evening. A great night of dancing and our fledgling club were a happy group. We even ventured to a State Convention at the Hartfield Park Recreation Centre at which there appeared to be thousands of dancers (probably hundreds) but to we country hicks the numbers exceed our town sizes many fold so that was a new country in its own right. Colorful dress and loads of fun callers etc.

1990 saw our family return back to the big smoke. After I had had some major surgery and was recovering from it we attempted to return to Square Dancing at Prim’s club Greenfinches, alas that wasn’t to work out, so another few years out of the activity. Eventually we returned to Greenfinches with Don Gauci at the helm and the rest is history, we are still dancing there every Tuesday night with a great crowd, and as history travels in circles back to Steve Turner being the club caller.

In 2008 while at Margaret River I was challenged by a group at an evening after party to try my hand at the Amateur Callers event the next year. Unfortunately 2009 we were overseas at the time of the event so I had to wait until 2010. At that event I was the winner and won the Judges Choice Trophy. That year I joined CAWA and the ACF. I then became Treasurer of CAWA later that year, a position I still currently hold.

I have called at the Annual Callers Ball since that time and also at the State Conventions in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. I was Co-programmer/MC at the 2012 and 2013 State Conventions along with Jeff Van Sambeeck and Jim Buckingham respectively as well as sound and music manager. I also currently represent the Callers Association of WA as the Caller Liaison Officer on the Square Dance Society of WA executive.

In 2010 I commenced my training as a Trainee Caller with Don Gauci as my mentor and Steve Turner as my Training Officer. I completed my training gaining accreditation as a Club Caller in December 2013. I have also attended a number of training sessions since that date and continue to avail myself of opportunities to improve the craft of calling both singing and hoedown dances.

I have been privileged to be invited to call for the following clubs:-

Riverside – Queens Park
Dolphins – Mandurah
Augusta Margaret River – Busselton
Greenfinches – Hamersley
Allemanders – Mindarie

Avon Valley Squares in York have also extended me an invitation as a guest caller at both their birthday and Christmas dances since 2011.

2013 saw my wife and I commence a club of our own in the Swan Valley, a well known historic wine growing region in Perth. The club celebrated its birthday in March and just recently graduated its first set of dancers with a Spanish themed evening which drew a crowd of over 100 dancers to a fabulous celebration. This club has developed into a strong group of friendly welcoming dancers who have now become a committee run club and are showing a great strength in the square dancing community of WA.

I have been instrumental in the introduction of standardization of music mode delivery at large state functions, including the use of MP3 or Vinyl only and the use of powered USB hubs. I have conducted a training course on this for WA Callers. The system was trialed at the Callers Ball in 2011 and with modifications and adaption has been used with ever growing success at successive Caller Balls and State Convention since. In 2013 in support of this initiative the Callers Association of WA supplied each caller in WA with a specially marked CAWA USB for use at all functions. The programme is now recognized and at the forthcoming State Convention the only two acceptable forms of presenting music for callers will be via a USB or Vinyl. Whilst I wouldn’t make such a bold claim to be the first in Australia to implement this strategy I would happily agree that I am at the forefront of attempting to standardize music presentation at large events to improve the “professionalism” of the callers for the enjoyment of all dancers.

Recently I have released my first square dance song “Ninety-Nine Ways” under the GR8Trax label and am in the process of releasing a second shortly, of a modern original Australian pop group song released in 2013,  along with a “surprise” duo fun one in the not too distant future. I certainly am looking forward to being part of the 2015 Come to The Cabaret Celebration in Adelaide.

Steve Turner - Western Australia

Steve Turner started Square Dancing in England with his family in 1967 before immigrating to Perth Western Australia in November 1968.

The Turner family joined a club called White Gum Valley, the only Square Dance club in operation at the time, after the boom days during the 50’s and 60’s.  A club branched out from White Gum Valley which Steve eventually took over as the resident caller.

In 1973 Steve formed another club, moving into a higher level of dance, the first one of its kind in the West. Beginner classes were being conducted twice a week and in 1982 a Round Dance club (ballroom type dancing) was formed and this new hobby had become 5 nights per week.

In the mid 70’s Steve was receiving invitations to call at Interstate functions on weekends and before too long was travelling the country calling from Adelaide to Cairns to Tasmania.

A successful 21 day calling tour in the U.S.A. is an achievement of which he is proud and would be one of the highlights of his calling career.

During the years of 1970-80 Steve had a demonstration dance team which performed in public and at Society functions.  Steve has worked hard at his activity, training others to become callers, helping many others, whether it be dancing or committee work and he deserves the accolades often placed on him.

Jeffrey Garbutt - Western Australia

Hello, my name is Jeffrey Garbutt from Western Australia. I am the squaredance caller for "Jay Gees" square dance club in Bunbury. I am also the current president of the "Callers Association of Western Australia" and have been the editor of the "Australia Callers Federation" magazine named "Callerlink" since June 2000.

Square dancing is a bit of a passion for me and I have been a square dancer and a caller for several years. I started square dancing in August 1973 at Sundowners Club at the White Gum Valley hall, learning from Kevin Kelly. I was still in my last year at High School at the time. That high school was "John Curtin Senior High School" which was actually the venue of the Australian 12th National Square Dance convention in 1971, (but at the time I did not know that this event was happening at my high school). I was, (of course), aware that square dancing existed and was exposed to it for many years of watching the Reg Lindsay country music TV show.

I started my career as a hydrohrapher in 1974 and was initially based in Albany. In Albany I met many friendly people and even used to board with family of the resident square dance caller (Alan Grogan). I was not initially interested in taking my hobby further, but events soon changed things. In my job I occasionally stayed a couple of days in Esperance, which meant missing the occasional club night. One of those club nights was an amateur caller night - which I wasn't too worried about missing it. But one night soon after Alan simply said that "Jeff is doing the next record", put on "Summer Sounds", and handed me the microphone.  I could see that I couldn't avoid it - so gave it a go. No-one was more surprised than me about what came out. For the rest of the year I did the occasional record at club night that year, but didn't take it more seriously straight away.

In 1975 I was transferred to Perth but didn't pursue calling straight away. Eventually I subscribed to "Sets in Order" magazine for more information and "Robertson Dance Supplies" for their new release service and started building up a small collection of records. Towards the end on 1975 I built up enough courage to ask Kevin Kelly (Sundowners) and Graham Halliwell (Riversides) to give me a chance at calling. I must have made an impression and was encouraged to become a trainee caller at the Callers Association. In 1976 I was accepted as a trainee caller in CAWA. In 1976 I was also transferred to Harvey which enabled me to attend Circle-C in Bunbury under the guidance of Les Johnson at Circle-C. Over the next months I would learn the trade of calling from any callers I came in contact with.  In 1977 Les decided it was too much work supporting Bunbury dancers from his new home in Coogee Beach near Perth. So he handed the club over to me.

In 1979 I was transferred back to Perth and said goodbye to the faithful dancers in Bunbury. In a short time I started Ace Squares in Kwinana/Rockingham area, met Tracie, got married, we started a family and I got serious about my day time career. So I gave up square dancing in 1982 and thought that was it for me as far as square dancing was concerned.

In 1990 I moved the family to the South West, dragged the kids to squaredancing, and in 1992 re-started Circle-C to supplement the dancing choice available in Bunbury. In 1995 another caller (Ross Henley) moved into Bunbury so that we had three clubs. I took over running a Perth club every week, (Riverside), from 1998. This was very a very busy time as I had to commute about 200 kilometres to get there. So I decided to join my club with Ross's club and give up my Bunbury club. In 2003 Ross had decided to move on and I started a new club known as "Jay Gees". In 2006 I ended my commitment to Riversides and applied my total commitment to Jay Gees. Of course the "Jay Gees" is based on my initials and represents the maxim that "if one really believes in something - they should put their own name it".

SECRETARY: Callers Association of Western Australia: 1977 to 1978 and 1999 to 2003

Jeff Van Sambeeck - Western Australia

I started square dancing in February 1976.

In 1977 I took up calling and became a qualified club caller in 1979.

My first club as caller was Dianella Rangers, which is the club I started with.

I still call for this club today.

I also call for the Boomerangs, a club I personally run together with Marilyn , my wife.

I have attended 27 Nationals. Served on the ACF Board since 2006 and 5 years in all as chairman.

Over the years I have put on a number of floor shows for the Nationals as well as State Conventions.

Being  a musician I have been quite busy producing music for square dancing these past few years.

I am hopeful that 2 round dances I have done, (Aussie flavour) will find their way to the showcase segments.
