Graham Elliott - South Australia

Graham’s introduction to square dancing came in the early 1970s when his family were encouraged to come along by neighbourhood friends. In the late 70s, whilst at Adelaide University, he joined the square dance club which operated there. It was here that he met his wife Dawn. During this time he also had the pleasure of dancing in the late Colin Huddleston's demonstration team. A few years later Graham tried his hand at calling at a couple of Adelaide clubs – he was no stranger to the stage having been involved in public speaking and plays during his school years.

In 1985 Graham & Dawn started a learners’ class which became their own club – the Adelaide Outlaws. Operating in the western suburbs of Adelaide, it maintained a healthy membership and in 1987, a Plus club was formed operating on the north side of Adelaide. Both clubs are still going strong today. Graham has been actively involved in the calling field having served as various executive positions on the State callers’ association, taken positions of secretary, public relations officer and chairman of the Australian Callers Federation and still serves on the Board. He is a member of Callerlab and is on the Mainstream committee. He has been feature caller at many interstate and overseas festivals and conventions and has had the pleasure of calling and dancing in Japan, Austria, New Zealand, USA and England. He is also a life member of the South Australian Square Dance Society.

Whilst he and Dawn thoroughly enjoy square dancing and the extended family of the clubs, there must also be time for work. Graham is a mechanical engineer in the oil and gas industry and Dawn is a primary school teacher.

Graham and Dawn are the Convenors of the 56th Australian National Square Dance Convention.  Graham is also, together with Les Tulloch, in charge of the square dance program at the convention.

Jeff Seidel - South Australia

Jeff was introduced to calling whilst living in Mildura in 1966.

After moving to Adelaide he was helped as a trainee caller by Allan Frost and Colin Huddleston. He proceeded to form his own club, Wild Frontier, which was eventually based at Kensington Park Uniting Church hall. Wild Frontier is 41 years old.

A couple of years later, recognizing a need to have a dance that went beyond the basics he began a Sunday night dance which became Kannella Squares. Kannella Squares is Australia’s oldest Plus Club and is now in its 39th year.

Jeff introduced Round Dancing on the Sunday night dances and in 1977 Jeff and June represented SA by dancing the Round Dance Showcase segment at the Perth National. Jeff again represented SA in the Showcase at the 1982 National in Brisbane.

He has also convened two Australian Nationals and has been involved on committees for several other Australian Nationals held in Adelaide starting with the 1974 National. There came a time when lots of his dancers were about to embark on University study, so Jeff formed, and for a time called for, another Square Dance club called Ausquad; based at Adelaide University.

Jeff attended Caller lab in USA in 1981 and has led several overseas Square Dance tours. He has called not only all over Australia but also all over the world, as part of the trips and at other times as an invited guest or feature caller. Over the years Jeff has conducted callers’ clinics nationally and has presented countless Square Dance demos in various venues.

Jeff worked as a Pathologist and then, until his recent retirement, with IMVS involving investigating mosquitoes. During his career he produced a basic teaching tape for use by the Education Department in schools and he took twelve months leave from work to teach school children and PE teachers.

Jeff was an instrumental and/or founding member of Australian Callers Federation, South Australian Square Dance Society and South Australian Callers Association. He is a Life member of ACF and SASDS and now a Life Patron of Australian National Square Dance Conventions.

Jeff has also taught our callers the art of sight calling including Graham Elliott, James Reid, Adrian Blyth, Geoff Moyle & Peter Heath to name a few. Wild Frontier Square Dance Club Inc assisted in the formation of Adelaide Outlaws and Festival City Squares.

Jeff is married to Susan and their twin boys Christopher and James have recently graduated with great results from Urrbrae High School.

Ian Rutter - South Australia

Ian Rutter commenced Square Dancing in 2000 when Leisurely Squares was running a Community Dance Program (CDP) on Friday nights.  After a year, once the program finished, he took a break from square dancing and returned in 2004 to Leisurely Squares when he learned a lot more.  After he graduated, he started visiting other clubs around Adelaide (Adelaide Outlaws, Shooting Stars, Wild Frontier, and Kannella Squares).

In 2005, he tried his hand on calling when Noes Noesbar, the caller for Leisurely Squares, asked if he was interested in giving Square Dance calling a go after he learned about Ian’s ability to sing from the talent shows organised by the club.  After Ian called a couple of songs, he thoroughly enjoyed it and has continued to call for Songs and Hoedowns today.

During his time as a caller, Ian attended a few sessions on calling such as ‘Behind the Microphone’ and some callers had given him advice on what to do when calling.

In 2011, after Trevor Hunt announced his retirement from calling for Shooting Stars, the name was changed to ‘Scoot Back Squares’ and an opportunity went to Ian to call for that club.  Currently, he has given a go in helping the people learning to ‘Square Dance’.

Ian became a member of SACA and ACF when he started calling for ‘Scoot Back Squares’.  He also called at the National Convention for the first time in Canberra in 2014.

Ian’s professional job is a Public Servant working for Centrelink.  He has worked for the Commonwealth Department for 20 years.

Thelma McCue - South Australia

Thelma first started square dancing when it first came to Adelaide in 1953 but had to leave when her husband Tom came home from Korea. She then became a stay at home mum raising four children.

In 1986 a friend suggested they take their husbands along to the National Square Dance Convention in Adelaide to see the square dancing but on seeing the Round dancing for the first time, Thelma and Tom got hooked on Rounds.

They started with Peter Heath at Round ’n Round. In 1987 they started square dancing with the Allamanders class. After graduating they danced with Shooting Stars, Festival City and the Outlaws. Thelma also started cueing that same year and was soon cueing for Peter and also the three square dance clubs. She then moved on to cue at all Society dances, Round Dance Association dances, and has since cued at all State Conventions and almost every National Convention. Thelma was made a life member of SASDS as well as the SA Round Dance Association. Thelma and Tom were honoured to be made Life Members of the Australian Round Dance Association.

They started their own club T & T Rounds in June 1991. They have run numerous learners classes. They have choreographed a dance for 13 Round Dance Festivals and have won on three occasions with “Lucky Lips”, “Waltz to Sorrento” and “Victory of Love”. Thelma’s “More than Ever Rhumba” and “Lucky Lips” are on our National List. Although Tom can no longer dance, Thelma still runs her club on Fridays and two sessions on Sundays, teaching from Phase 2 - 6.

Thelma and Tom have travelled all over Australia, and from New Zealand to Hawaii where she has cued her Rounds, as well as the Victorian Round Dance Festivals, and is looking forward to attending the 3 day Seminar and the Convention in 2015.

John V Casey - South Australia

About John V Casey – Square Dance Caller

John V Casey has been a Square Dance Caller since 1977, after joining the Garden City Promenaders and being taught to Square Dance and Call by the late Bill McHardy.

In 1978 I called for Rose City Wranglers in Warwick Queensland after Kevin Rettke (who started the Club) moved away from Town.  It was a weekly gig on Monday nights and I travelled the 80kms from Toowoomba to do the calling.

In 1979 I completed a 12 weekend Callers School run by the Late Bill McHardy.

Eventually I convinced Reg Hendy to take over the calling for Rose City Wranglers and I started Track 2 Square Dancing at Highfields,  just North of Toowoomba Qld in 1979. I called at Highfields for 18 months until I started Police training in September 1980.  I had to move to Brendale in 1981 as there was no vacancy in the Police Service in the Toowoomba area.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention at Cloudland, Brisbane in 1979.

I became a member of the Queensland Callers Association in 1980 and was Vice President in 1997 – remaining a member until 2009.

I was also Vice President of the Square Dancing Society of Queensland in 1997.

I was a member of the Australian Callers Federation from 1980 to 2009.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Brisbane in 1982.

In 1983 I completed a Callerlab Callers School  run by Vaughan Parrish from the USA.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Canberra in 1984.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Perth in 1985, where I was asked to Call when a top caller had reported in sick.

In 1986 I completed a week long Callers School at Casino NSW – run by Brian Hotchkies.

In 1986 I also started calling for Pine Rangers at Clontarf Qld, where I shared the Club with Lynette Warrington (now McPherson) until 1988 when Lynette took over full care of that club.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Geelong in 1987.

In 1987 I started a Square Dance Class in Kingscliffe NSW.  This Track 2 Square Dance Class was on Friday nights and continued until 1995.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Sydney in 1988.

I attended the National Square Dance Convention in Hobart in 1989. On the boat over to Tasmania all the official callers became ill and I was asked to call for the dancers in what was really rough conditions.  I managed to call to the end of the programmed time.  In appreciation, I was given a call at the National as a guest caller.

After resigning from the Police Force in 1990 I began my time as a full time Square Dance Caller/Badgemaker.  I had started making badges in 1979 and the idea was expanding. I had moved my calling from Albany Creek to our own venue at Sandgate Qld.

I attended and was a programmed caller at the National Square Dance Convention in Brisbane in 1990.

In 1991 I started a Track 2 Square Dancing at Palm Beach Qld.  This Class started on Friday Mornings after I was contracted to call at Fishermans Wharf on Thursday nights at the Spit at the Gold Coast in support of a Bush Band.  This Thursday gig lasted for eighteen months but the Palm Beach Classes continued until 1994.

In 1990 I attended a Callerlab Minilab at Coolangatta Qld.

In 1991 I completed a week long Callers School at Casino NSW – run by Brian Hotchkies.

In 1992 the late Eric Wendell asked me to call for his City 50+ Club at Brisbane City Hall. I called at this Club until I passed the teaching on to Kay Walker in 1998.

I also attended many Queensland Callers Association Classes run by David Smythe between 1993 and 1997.

These Classes continued until February 1998 When I received a letter from the State Government advising that I could no longer use the venue at Metro Arts as they needed it for an aboriginal to teach tribal dancing – I was given 2 weeks notice to quit.

I attended and was a programmed caller at the National Square Dance Convention in Sydney in 1995.
